SHERIDAN — Sheridan College is offering area residents the chance to be a college student and get free tuition, just for a day.

Saturday University — the free one-day college education — will be held at Spear-O-Wigwam campus July 20. The event is open to the public and will feature three lectures by University of Wyoming professors. Attendees can participate in one, two or all three of the offered lectures.

The first lecture, “Living with elephants and lions: Humans and wildlife on the Kenyan landscape” by Dr. Jake Goheen begins at 9 a.m. and will highlight new research into the habits of large animals, new conservation practices and how human communities coexist with wildlife in Kenya.

“Pines and crossbill birds: Evolving together into new species” by Dr. Craig Benkman will begin at 10:15 a.m. Benkman will discuss how plants and animals adapt to each other over time and how it can lead to the formation of new species. Rocky Mountain lodgepole pine and the crossbills that feed on them form a prime example of this co-evolution and the natural diversification it leads to.

The final lecture, “Carbon credits on the range and in the forest: Does it matter?” by Dr. Indy Burke will begin at 11:30 a.m. Burke will explain how carbon credits work, the science behind them and how they can affect Wyoming and its landscapes.

Coffee and pastries will be served at 8:30 a.m. and a free barbecue lunch including a roundtable discussion with the professors will be held following the last lecture. Pre-registration is required at http://saturdayuniversityjuly20.
