SHERIDAN — The Northern Wyoming Community College District will host the Young Writer’s Camp July 27 through Aug. 2. The camp, part of the Learn Outdoors program, will be held at the Spear-O-Wigwam campus.

The camp offers youth ages 14 to 18 the chance to learn different writing styles in an outdoor environment. The class will be led by three instructors who will encourage students to learn how to write in their own style and learn from one another with thoughtful feedback. In addition, campers will participate in art, communal living, music, hiking, movement and improvisational acting. Campers can sleep in cabins on campus or in tents. Cost for the camp is $300 and covers tuition, lodging and meals.

“The best part of the camp is its relaxed atmosphere,” instructor Micah Wyatt said. “Campers can find their own writing voice in an environment that is devoid of judgment or assignments … In short, we just write.”

Wyatt, Christine Fadden and Kara Bacon will lead this summer’s camp. Wyatt previously ran the camp through the Sheridan County Arts Council at the Thorne-Rider Youth Camp in Story. Wyatt, a Sheridan native, teaches public speaking and composition at Sheridan College. He is a partner in a Sheridan-based law firm but enjoys most of his time as successful musician and community theater actor.

Fadden recently won a Wyoming Arts Council Blanchan Doubleday Award. Newer to the area, Fadden specializes in fiction and has a history in teaching writing to various age groups.

Bacon, a Sheridan native, has a background in all aspects of community journalism and poetry. Bacon recently returned to Sheridan to pursue an additional career in massage therapy.
