SHERIDAN — Dementia Friendly Wyoming is ready to offer workshops to community care-partners with a variety of dementia specific tools, techniques and resources as part of Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care philosophy. Snow is a nationally recognized dementia educator and trainer and an occupational therapist with 30 years of experience in geriatrics. She has helped thousands of people by sharing her dementia care philosophy and caregiving techniques.
Heather Comstock is the dementia care educator with Dementia Friendly Wyoming and is a certified trainer and coach for Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care. Comstock’s goal is to help families, professionals and community partners better understand how it feels to be living with the challenges that occur with dementia and learn how to recognize and intervene effectively when behaviors change. The series of workshops will integrate facts about the brain and what happens to someone when doing, thinking, reasoning or processing becomes difficult.
These carefully constructed workshops include a combination of lecture, discussion, role play, group interaction, case discussion and problem-solving among learners to actively engage learners in the content. This dementia-specific educational experience will give participants immediate practical application.
“I feel that people will consider these workshops a valuable use of their time,” Comstock said.
This workshop is for anyone that is providing support for others in the community that may be living with dementia.
“Not everyone is a direct care partner but they may be comfortable with cooking meals, doing laundry or running errands to help the family,” Comstock said. “There are multiple ways that we, as members of our community, can contribute our time and energy.”
These workshops will help many to feel more comfortable in supporting those living with dementia and their care partners.
Dementia Friendly Wyoming is funded through the Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative grant from Administration on Aging, Administration for Community Living.
