Lady Broncs win one, lose two

SHERIDAN—The SHS girls soccer team went 1-2 Saturday at a jamboree in Casper.

Playing three shortened games, 26 minute halves, the Lady Broncs opened with a win over Kelly Walsh, but dropped close games with Rock Springs and Natrona Saturday.

“I felt like it was a good day,” head coach Tom Racette said. “We won one, lost two, but we know we’re a young team and there’s a lot of room for growth.”

The Lady Broncs beat KW 3-0 behind two goals from Jennae Fieldgrove and one from Emily Julian.

“I thought the Kelly Walsh game was good, not just because of the score, but we played well,” Racette said. “We were fresh. We had played an overtime game the night before, and most of the teams hadn’t played the night before. By the end of the day we were pretty worn down.”

The Lady Broncs were edged 2-1 by Rock Springs in their second game and then fell 1-0 to Natrona. Julian scored the goal against Rock Springs.

“We need to be able to attack more efficiently,” Racette said, on early improvements from his team. “We struggled a little bit in attacking, and missed some midfield possession so we often missed out on opportunities in attack.”

The Lady Broncs play their first home games this weekend in what’s forecast to be a cold one, when they host Cheyenne South at 6 p.m. Friday followed by a game with Laramie at noon Saturday.

Broncs edged by KW, hammer Rock Springs, Natrona

SHERIDAN—The Bronc soccer team had a day Saturday much like their opener Friday night.

Seeing improvement as the day progressed, the Broncs followed a 2-1 loss to Kelly Walsh with two routs at the Casper jamboree.

Head coach Kevin Rizer credited the overtime game with Riverton the night before as a possible reason for a sluggish start against the Trojans, which in the end the Broncs couldn’t overcome.

“Kelly Walsh knew us and had something to prove,” Rizer said. Kelly Walsh had lost 5-1 to 3A Jackson in their opener the night before.

All three of the Broncs/KW game’s goals were scored in the first half. Mateus Segura scored the Broncs’ lone goal.

In the second two games, the Broncs dominated.

Sheridan beat Rock Springs 3-0 and then Natrona 4-0. Lucas Wollenman scored twice against Rock Springs, and Nick Estes scored once. Against Natrona, Segura scored twice, Patrick McClurg and Lorenz Kohne each scored once.

Rizer noted that the Rock Springs performance was particularly dominant, perhaps even more than the 3-0 score suggested.

“In the end, it was a good day, a lot like Friday night,” Rizer said. “We found out a lot about ourselves, exactly what you want from the first weekend, what you need to work on, what you do well.”

Sheridan heads to Cheyenne South Friday before taking on an always tough Laramie soccer team at noon Saturday.
