SHERIDAN — The Sheridan High School boys and girls track teams finished their first competition with two top five team finishes in Casper Saturday.

The Natrona County Early Bird track meet brought 17 girls and 16 boys teams to Natrona County High School, opening the spring season for the Broncs and Lady Broncs.

“Many of the indoor track athletes were able to pick up where they left off a few weeks ago in terms of placing and performing well at the track meet,” head coach Art Baures said.

“The team placing was solid for both boys and girls teams and we hope to be as competitive in all of the meets this season,” he continued. “It was good to see so many of the athletes in the top eight of their events. It was also great to see the athletes establish a starting point with marks in their respective events.”

The Lady Broncs were fourth after the one-day meet, finishing with 65.5 team points behind Worland, Cheyenne Central and Natrona, respectively. Host team Natrona took first with 98 points.

For the girls, the fourth-place finish came by way of first-place performances from Zoe Sherman in the 800-meter run, their 4 X 800 meter relay and from Shayla Christensen in shot put.

“Zoe had a great day in putting her relay team in first place on the first leg and distanced the field in doing so,” Baures said. “She also had to come from behind to win the 800-meter run and that showed a lot of courage on her part.”

Sherman’s first-place time in the 800 was 2 minutes and 34 seconds.

The 4 X 800 relay team was made up of Jennifer Custis, Marissa Hegy, Erin Jensik and Sherman.

For Christensen, who took All-State at the indoor meet two weeks ago in Gillette, her first-place throw traveled 35 feet 9.75 inches.

“Shayla won the shot put, and it was good for her to win the first event of the new season,” Baures said. “She had some momentum after winning the Indoor State shot put and she is off to a good start for this outdoor season.”

Addison Stedillie was third in the 100-meter hurdles, and Katie Campbell was fourth in the 300 hurdles.

On the boys side, the Broncs placed fifth out of a 16-team field. Natrona and Kelly Walsh were well ahead of the rest of the field in first and second place, respectively with 195.5 and 137 points.

“For the boys, we were very happy with the individual performances, and we were led by seniors Casey Carlton, Nate Kane, and Nate Berg,” Baures said. “They are going to have a very important role this season as leaders on the team, and we are hopeful that they will be able to place in the bigger meets this season.”

Sheridan scored 37 points behind Douglas, 43, and Cheyenne South, 41.

The Broncs were led by Nate Berg’s second-place time in the 300-meter hurdles, and a second-place finish by their 4 X 800 meter relay team.

Berg ran a 42.68 second time in the hurdles. He was on the fifth place finishing 4 X 400 relay team of Kane, Dakota Larner and Brian Kjerstad, and he placed fifth in the long jump.

The Broncs 4 X 800 relay team consisted of Micah Sweeny, Rion Szatkowski, Taylor Bruso and Taylor Wendtland. They ran the race in 9 minutes, 2.46 seconds.

Casey Carlton was third in the 200-meter dash with a 23.61 second time, and he and Kane tied for eighth place in the 100-meter dash with identical 11.79 second times.

The SHS track team will continue their season with the Yellowstone Invitational Saturday in Cody.
