SHERIDAN —Two Tongue River High School track athletes pre-qualified for state in their first competition of the year.
Sarah Nielsen and Josiah Huff each performed well with limited outdoor practice entering the NC Early Bird in Casper.
While the two were short practice and on spring break, still, Head coach Chuck Walters said he wasn’t surprised by their success.
“We’ve had kids in and out of practice and spring break, trying to deal with the weather, and having those two pre-qualify right off the bat was pretty nice,” he said.
Huff, a senior, pre-qualified in the 400 and 800 meter runs, winning the 400. Nielsen pre-qualified in the shot put and discuss competitions.
Huff’s 53-second run in the 400 beat out a field of nearly 60 runners from the 16 high school field. He placed fourth in the 800. His two placings were the only team points for the Eagles, totaling 15.
Nielsen took second in the discus throw. She was fourth in the shot put, behind Sheridan’s Shayla Christensen in first. Alison Geary of Sheridan was fifth. Nielsen earned all of her team’s 14 points.
Tongue River only took 10 kids to Casper as Huff helped the boys place 12th and Nielsen helped the girls to 13th. They move on to the Jerry Campbell Invite in Buffalo Saturday.
Big Horn High School’s track team will open their season in Buffalo as well.
