SHERIDAN — March Against Monsanto has announced that on Saturday, tens of thousands of activists around the world will “March Against Monsanto.”
Currently, marches are planned on six continents, in 36 countries and more than 250 cities. In the U.S., events are slated to occur simultaneously in 48 states and Sheridan will host one of the marches.
“The ‘March Against Monsanto,’ is being held to educate the public and help spread awareness about the harmful effects of genetically modified foods and their effects on our food system,” event organizer Bonnie Gregory said. “We are gathering for our health and for that of our children, in support of small family farms and ranches and for our environment. Our goal is to raise awareness and get people asking questions.”
Sheridan residents are scheduled to join the worldwide protest Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Grinnell Plaza. According to Gregory, protestors will gather on the corners of Main Street and Grinnell. Informational handouts, a petition and postcards for our state representatives will be available.
Tami Monroe Canal, lead organizer and creator of the now-viral Facebook page, says she was inspired to start the movement to protect her two daughters.
Major sponsors include GMO Free USA, NationofChange and Films for Action.
