BIGHORN NATIONAL FOREST — A 39-year-old North Dakota man is dead after an avalanche occurred in the Bighorn National Forest Friday.

Deputies from the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the Hunt Mountain Road area near U.S. Highway 14 West just after noon Friday. SCSO Deputy Mike Mullikin said the male was snowmobiling when the avalanche occurred.

According to the Kevin Sessions with the Sheridan County Coroner’s Office, when the avalanche was triggered Levi Robert Hammond was thrown from his snowmobile and into a tree. The collision fractured Hammond’s neck.
