SHERIDAN — The Lady Broncs didn’t enter the 4A girls state tournament worrying about being a No. 4 seed.

On Thursday, against No. 1-seed Green River, they didn’t play like it either.

The Lady Broncs reached Friday’s 4A girls state semifinal after a 2-1 nail-biter win Thursday afternoon at Rock Springs High School.

After falling behind early 1-0, Robbi Ryan scored with seven minutes remaining in the first half to even the score. She scored again 18 minutes into the second half off a corner kick.

Head coach Tom Racette said that his team carried confidence to Rock Springs as one that has improved consistently over the last month.

“We’ve faced tough competition every game this year,” he said. “We wanted to surprise everyone but ourselves.”

Halftime was extended by 30 minutes due to a lightning delay, Racette said, and the Lady Broncs came out the much stronger team in the second half, dominating the run of play and securing the winning goal.

Now the Lady Broncs play Cheyenne East, a team that they’ve lost to twice this year.

“We need to play very good defense, they’re an explosive team,” Racette said. East shutout Sheridan twice this season. “We need to play strong defense like we did tonight and intelligently develop that into a strong offense.”

Sheridan plays East at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Rock Springs High School. All the 4A West teams were eliminated on day one, so the winner gets Cheyenne Central/Laramie in Saturday afternoon’s championship game at 3:30.

Sheridan is looking to return to the title game for the second year in a row.
