SHERIDAN — The Sheridan City Councilwoman arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol early this morning has issued a written apology, noting that the results of her blood alcohol test are not yet available.

“Regardless of how the test will turn out, I want to say that I am deeply sorry for my behavior,” wrote Ward 1 Councilwoman Shelleen Smith. “It is never smart to drive after drinking and I certainly should know better.

“This was a severe lapse in judgment on my part and I apologize to the citizens of Sheridan and to my family and friends for this mistake.”

Smith was arrested shortly after midnight this morning when a Sheridan police officer pulled her over on Big Horn Avenue near Absaraka Street.

She was released from the Sheridan County jail several hours later after posting bail.

“I am thankful to the Sheridan police for their efforts to ensure that people are not driving drunk,” she went on to write. “I accept full responsibility for this incident and will accept the full consequences for my actions.”

Reached for comment on the arrest, Mayor Dave Kinskey declined to issue a statement, saying he was unaware of the facts of the case.

Ward 2 Councilman Alex Lee echoed that sentiment and would not speculate as to whether the body might take any action against Smith.

“The prudent thing to do is wait until all the facts have come out, and because of that reason I’m going to hold any further comment,” he said.

Smith was elected to represent Ward 1 in the Sheridan City Council last November. Her ward encompasses the largely residential northwest portion of the city.

Aside from the City Council, she has also been active in organizations including the nonprofit North Main Association, the City of Sheridan Planning Commission and the Sheridan County Fair Association.

Her initial appearance in circuit court is scheduled for Monday at 2 p.m.
