SHERIDAN —Sheridan City Councilwoman Shelleen Smith was arrested for driving under the influence early Friday morning near the intersection of Big Horn Avenue and Absaraka Street.

Smith, 38, was stopped by Sheridan police officers at 12:32 a.m., according to records from the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office.

Her initial appearance in circuit court is scheduled for April 29 at 2 p.m. As of press time, she remained in the Sheridan County jail and was unavailable for comment.

Circuit Court Judge Shelley Cundiff is expected to set bond later today.

A call to Mayor Dave Kinskey for comment was not immediately returned.

Ward 2 Councilman Alex Lee declined to comment, citing a lack of information about the arrest.

“The prudent thing to do is wait until all the facts have come out, and because of that reason I’m going to hold any further comment,” he said.

Smith was elected to represent Ward 1 in the Sheridan City Council last November. Her ward encompases the largely residential northwest portion of the city.

Aside from the City Council, Smith has also been active in organizations including the nonprofit North Main Association, the City of Sheridan Planning Commission and the Sheridan County Fair Association.
