SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College women stayed alive with a 72-59 win over Dawson Community College in their postseason tournament Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Generals entered the women’s Region IX tournament in Scottsbluff, Neb., at Western Wyoming Community College as a top seed after winning the Region IX North last weekend.

“Our kids really came out ready to play,” head coach Frank McCarthy said. “Dawson played their best game they had against us, they shot well, gave us a great fight. I was happy with our kids fight … This time of the year you just want to win and survive.”

Kayla Kiriau and Jasmine Davis each logged two fouls in the first half, head coach Frank McCarthy noted, but Kiriau’s play in the second half helped pull SC through, he said.

Kiriau finished with 17 points and five offensive rebounds.

The Lady Generals will play the winner of Northwest/Otero on Tuesday afternoon. SC has reached the final eight, and gets a day off today while six of the other teams play second round games, including Northwest and Otero.

The Lady Generals stopped in Casper Saturday to watch the men play their first round game Saturday afternoon, and McCarthy said watching the men’s successful season end in the first round was eye-opening, going into the same situation the next day.

“It was a wake-up call for our girls, everybody’s going to take their best shot,” he said. “That could have happened to us too. We wanted to make sure we were ready.”
