SHERIDAN — Sheridan’s John Kienast finished tied for fourth in the National Car Rental Rocky Mountain Section PGA Assistant Championship yesterday.
Twenty-four assistant professionals took to Blackfoot Municipal Golf Club in Blackfoot, Idaho, over the last two days to compete in the 36-hole tournament. The top two finishers from the tournament qualify for the 38th National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship in Port St. Lucie, Florida, later this year.
Kienast, the assistant pro at the Powder Horn, was sitting atop the leaderboard after his first-round 68 had him at 4-under-par for the day.
He began his round with a birdie on the first hole and added another on the sixth before back-to-back bogies brought him back to even-par. He quickly recovered, birdying the next four consecutive holes to finish the round in first.
It was the back nine of his second round that really lost it for him.
After finishing even on the front, he opened his final nine holes of the tournament with a bogey on the 10th hole.
He was able to get the stroke back on the 12th hole, but a bogey on 13 and a nine on the par-5 14th were backbreakers. He finished 5-over on the back nine and for the day.
“Gosh, I was super close, I really was,” Kienast said after his final round. “Golf can be a tease sometimes. I guess that’s what keeps me coming back.”
Kienast’s 1-over-par total wasn’t enough to surpass Buhl, Idaho, assistant pro Jake Harr’s winning score. Harr won the tournament, shooting 5-under after both rounds. Joey Lovell, from Bozeman, Montana, also qualified for the national tournament, finishing second at 4-under-par.
