SHERIDAN — Primary elections are underway and everywhere you look colorful signs and ads prominently displaying last names are popping up. Next week, a new batch of hopefuls will join the race.
The filing period to run in the general elections for all school and college boards opens Aug. 6 and Sheridan County will likely see a number of trustees hoping for re-election as well as a couple of vacant seats.
Being a split district, three of the trustees on the Sheridan County School District 1 board are required to reside in specific areas — one each for Ranchester, Dayton and Big Horn — but the two seats up for election this year are both trustees at large and can be filled by anyone residing in the district.
In fact, all of the positions opening up this year are “at large” and may be held by any person residing in the appropriate district for the seat.
Terms are expiring for four of the nine trustees on the Sheridan County School District 2 board.
Residing in the correct area is the only true requirement of eligibility and assuming a complete and correct application is submitted within the right time period, all eligible applicants will be put on the ballot.
Any interested candidates for an open position should file an application with the Secretary of State between Aug. 6-25.
This may be done in the Sheridan County Clerk’s Office at the Sheridan County courthouse located at 224 S. Main St. or by obtaining the application online at soswy.state.wy.us.
All trustees selected for these positions will hold four-year terms and be up for re-election again in 2018.
