(AP) — Marqueston Huff was everywhere for the Wyoming defense during the final full scrimmage of spring practice.

The Cowboys senior cornerback returned an interception 84 yards for a touchdown and blocked a field goal on Wednesday, as the defense downed the offense 72-62.

“It is always good to make plays on the ball,” Huff said in a release. “We did a good job of coming out and creating turnovers [Wednesday].”

The defense intercepted the offense three times, with junior safety Darrenn White adding a pick-6 as well. Wyoming freshman defensive tackle James Diamanti also blocked a field goal attempt; the defense totaled four sacks and nine tackles for loss.

“At the end, we gave up two big plays during the two-minute period and gave up a couple scores from the four-yard line, but through 85 percent of the scrimmage they pretty much dominated,” Wyoming coach Dave Christensen said of the defense. “That was good to see. They got it handed to them last week.

“This week, they came out and played much better.”

Both of Cowboys junior quarterback Brett Smith’s interceptions were returned for touchdowns, but he finished with 221 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Wyoming junior wide receiver Dominic Rufran had six receptions for 134 yards and two touchdowns; senior Robert Herron had four receptions for 74 yards and the other touchdown.

A week after getting gouged for 335 yards on the ground, the defense responded by holding the offense to 122 yards on 46 carries. Cowboys freshman running back Omar Stover gained 46 yards yards, as the defense held the offense to 2.7 yards per carry.

Christensen bristled at the offensive line play, especially at center, and said the quarterbacks forced some passes.

“There certainly are some things offensively that we need to straighten out,” Christensen said. “It’s hard to run an offense if you can’t snap the ball to the quarterback, and we had balls everywhere [Wednesday].”

Wyoming junior linebacker Jordan Stanton led the way with 11 total tackles, senior Devyn Harris added nine total tackles; Huff added two total tackles and pass break-up.

UW junior cornerback Blair Burns had the third interception. Cowboys sophomore defensive end Eddie Yarbrough had one sack and five total tackles; sophomore “Buck” linebacker-defensive end hybrid Siaosi Hala’api’api had two tackles for loss and one sack, while senior Jeff Roueche added 2.5 tackles for loss, including a sack.

Wyoming continues practice at 8 a.m. on Friday with its 11th practice of the spring; the spring game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on April 27 at War Memorial Stadium.
