Besides losing weight there is another good reason for eating green salads everyday: Lettuce and other green vegetables are good sources of Vitamin K, and women who eat plenty of them are less likely to develop osteoporosis.
Nutritionists studied the diets of 70,000 women who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study at Harvard Medical School and documented their hip fractures over a 10 year period (breaking a hip after a mild injury is an indication of severe osteoporosis).
According to the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, women who ate lettuce at least once a day had a 45 percent lower risk of fracturing their hips than those who ate lettuce only once a week. Researchers say Vitamin K is essential for blood clotting and bone growth and may inhibit the production of chemicals in the body that cause bone loss. The women who maintained strong bones consumed at least a half a cup of kale, spinach, or broccoli or one cup of lettuce daily.
A Good Idea — To sharpen scissors that have grown dull simply fold a piece of extra-fine grain sandpaper so that the grain faces out on both sides. Then make several clean cuts.
Alcohol in recipes —
When a recipe calls for alcohol, how do you get around using it?
To ensure flavor here are some guidelines for adapting recipes using substitutions.
Fruit juices such as apple, cranberry, and white grape are excellent substitutes for wine.
If a recipe calls for a fruit-flavored liqueur, use the fruit nectar instead.
Sparkling juices are good substitutes for champagne. The integrity of the recipe will remain as long as you use the specified amount.
