SHERIDAN — After a slow start in the preliminary rounds of the 4A boys state swimming tournament, Sheridan High School continued to face tough opponents and finished the meet in 11th place.

Presley Felker was the only individual swimmer to place in the final round of the state meet Saturday morning. Felker took seventh in the 500-yard freestyle swim with a time of 5:16.75. He beat his time recorded in the preliminary round by almost four seconds.

Two Bronc relay teams placed in the state finals.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jacob Ahlstrom, Drew Reed, Caleb Stacy and Trinton Myers took 10th place with a time of 1:41.48, shaving two seconds off their time in the preliminary round.

The boys faced tough competitors as the Kelly Walsh team set a new 4A record during the preliminary round of the state meet with a time of 1 minute 26.12 seconds. The old record was 1:26.89, set in 1997 by Green River. The team then broke their own record in the final round Saturday to set a new 4A state record time of 1:25.95.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Ahlstrom, Felker, Marcus Holscher and Zach Ahlstrom took 11th in their final race. The team pushed hard and shaved several seconds off their preliminary round time of 3:48.24 to finish in just 3:39.22.

In the end, Kelly Walsh was named state champs with 265 points. Sheridan scored 17.

“The meet was a very positive step for the future,” head coach Brent Moore said. “Of the seven guys we took to state, four were freshman, two sophomores and one junior. I really feel like they learned a great deal from the weekend, about themselves and about what it takes to compete at that level. I think they will come back next year with a strong desire to be better than 11th place.”
