SHERIDAN — The WYO Theater Capital Campaign recently announced a pledge of $500,000 from Forrest Mars.
“Mr. Mars’ pledge is the largest gift from an individual,” campaign co-chair Richard Davis said. “His support of the capital campaign, together with other major foundation pledges, was critical to our being able to begin the project last fall.”
“We are so grateful to Mr. Mars for this gift and the many others he has made over the years in support of many Sheridan area community organizations,” co-chair Kandi Davis added. “This latest gift to help with the WYO Theater expansion is a mark of his generosity and community spirit.”
When completed in early 2014, the facility will include a second theater, which will be known as the Mars Black Box Theater, faculty offices, a larger lobby and concession area, additional restrooms and dressing rooms, additional wing space on the main stage, upgraded technical capabilities on the main stage and a costume design and construction facility.
“Currently, work continues on the installation of sheet rock on the interior walls,” WYO Executive Director Nicolas Johnson said. “Electrical and plumbing rough-in is also nearing completion and a number of design decisions have been made. Weather permitting we anticipate getting the brick work on the street side of the building started within the next three weeks.
Initial support for the project came through grants from Wyoming Business Council, secured by the city of Sheridan with the assistance of the Sheridan College development office. Private donations and local area foundation support has come through the work of the committee.
A Public Campaign is currently underway. Donations of any size are needed to fulfill two different matching grants; one from the Homer & Mildred Scott Foundation and the other from the Peter Kiewit Foundation. Those wishing to become a part of the project may contact the WYO Theater at 672-9083.
