SHERIDAN — The Sheridan High School cross country team trekked to Loveland, Colo., to participate in the Sweetheart Invitational Friday, and even though the team scores weren’t at the top, it was a good experience overall, coach Art Baures said.

“Overall, it’s good to come to a big meet like this with big teams. We had Colorado teams that are very good. It was a good challenge for our kids,” Baures said. “It’s good for us to go onto the road and get off the bus. We learned a lot. We’re young. It’s good for us.”

The varsity boys scored 10th out of 14 teams with 203 points.

Junior Taylor Bruso took seventh with a time of 17:09, which bettered his time from last year by almost 30 seconds.

“For him to run better than last year in non-favorable conditions was really pretty good for him,” Baures said.

Sophomore Janika Sweeney took 41st out of 105 varsity girl runners with a time of 21:52. Sweeney is the number one girl and her time in Loveland was her best time of the year for a 5K, Baures said.

The varsity girls placed 12th out of 15 teams, while the junior varsity girls placed 10th out of 13 teams. JV boys placed 5th out of 13 teams.

Baures said several runners ran their first varsity race at the meet, which will enable Sheridan to run full varsity teams now.

“Our young kids have to be prepared to run varsity, and this is a good first step,” Bauers said.
Baures said the meet will help the team prepare for bigger meets at the end of the season including conference and state.

“We learned lessons that will definitely help us in the end,” he said.

The team will watch some alumni in Michael Rotellini and Dylan Morin run in a college meet for the University of Wyoming at Colorado University before returning home.
