SHERIDAN — The list of keynote and breakout session speakers is nearly complete for the FAB (For. About. By) Women’s Conference being organized by The Sheridan Press and set for Oct. 4-5 at Sheridan College.

Brig. Gen. Kathy Wright, the first female general in the Wyoming National Guard, will open the conference as Friday’s luncheon speaker. She has also agreed to speak as part of a panel on women in nontraditional roles Saturday.

Wright’s parents graduated from Sheridan High School and Wright herself was born in Sheridan before moving around a lot as a kid.

Her extended family still owns a ranch near Decker and Wright said she looks forward to visiting Sheridan again this fall.

Wright has served in the military since 1973. She was just the sixth female to enlist in the Wyoming Army National Guard at the time.

Wright will discuss the challenges and joys of being a woman in a male-dominated profession.

Wright joins two other FAB keynote speakers — Sarah Calhoun of Red Ants Pants and Liza Donnelly, a cartoonist published with The New Yorker magazine.

Calhoun began her business career with a degree in environmental science and five years experience of teaching outdoor education. She’ll talk about how and why she started her entrepreneurial adventure during Saturday’s luncheon.

Donnelly is a contract cartoonist with The New Yorker where she has been drawing commentary about culture and politics for more than 30 years. She is also a weekly columnist and cartoonist for and draws weekly cartoons on gender issues and women’s rights for the news site Women’s Enews.

In her keynote address Friday night, Donnelly will discuss how women can use humor to change the world and how men can and should be women’s partner in that quest.

The three keynote speakers will join a slough of local and statewide speakers on a range of issues such as self defense, women’s health and basic car mechanics.

The FAB Women’s Conference is being organized by The Sheridan Press as a way to empower, educate and bring together women of all backgrounds in Sheridan. While this year is the first-ever conference, the newspaper hopes to make it an annual event.
